Hi, and thanks for your interest in 586 CrossFit Asylum. Additionally, thanks for your interest in starting or continuing your personal quest for elite physical fitness. Let’s improve the world together!

As a lifelong fitness and sporting participant, I have had the opportunity to take part in several exercise and conditioning programs. I can say with all sincerity that CrossFit reigns supreme over them all in terms of developing overall fitness!

During my life, I have played organized sports including baseball, football, soccer and softball -if you consider softball a sport. I played football at a semi-professional level and was afforded the opportunity to work out with Division I through Division III collegiate athletes. I learned plenty about developing strength, power and speed from the experience.

I’ve also challenged myself in the endurance arena by completing half marathons, triathlons, Muddy Buddy events and the inaugural Warrior Dash held in Michigan. Throughout these efforts I worked with swimming and running coaches in order to develop cardiorespiratory capacity, flexibility and technique.

I thought I was in pretty darn good shape a few years ago. I was training for triathlons while still pushing some reasonably heavy iron. But, I found it difficult to maintain my strength while trying to build stamina. Furthermore, I was spending a significant amount of my “free time” in the gym… or in the water… or on the bike… or running. All of those are great activities but the time investment was preventing me from effectively pursuing other personal goals. I needed a new model of exercise if I was going to fully enjoy life’s pursuits.

When I was introduced to CrossFit, I was blown away! My first workout lasted about 30 minutes and it had me dry heaving (Thanks, Jim!). I knew I was hooked.

Over the past few years of applying the CrossFit philosophy, I have greatly reduced the amount of time I spend exercising because of the efficiency and efficacy of CrossFit. Through CrossFitting, I lost 16 pounds s and 2 inches off my waist in about four months! I didn’t even know I had that kind of excess weight and girth. Though I was dropping weight, I retained my strength and even improved my lower body and trunk strength as a result of CrossFit’s concentration on developing the body core and posterior chain. None of these results are miraculous: they are obtainable if YOU put in the effort because the method is proven!

Other personal interests in my life include generating and fostering meaningful relationships with family and friends, singing loudly and playing guitar poorly in a couple of rock -n- roll bands; Ape Hanger and Berserker, and mentoring high school students from Metro Detroit through the Art of Leadership Foundation.

Author’s note: “efficacy” – the ability to produce a desired effect. Yeah, I had to look it up the first time I saw the word.
